‘Our hearts go out to the people who lost loved ones’: Miami EMS chief on deadly helicopter crash

Miami-Dade paramedics are mourning a helicopter crash in the city’s west that killed one person and injured six others.

The helicopter crashed into a ditch in the middle of a rural subdivision Tuesday afternoon in a residential area on the outskirts of the Miami suburb of Coral Gables, police said.

Dade police Chief George Gavron said the victim of the crash was a 19-year-old man and his 19-month-old daughter.

Gavron told reporters at a news conference that the victim and the child were pronounced dead at the scene.

He said it was not immediately clear how the helicopter’s pilot managed to maintain control and land the aircraft safely.

“Our hearts are very much with the victims and their families,” Gavros said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”

A second person on board died at the hospital, he said.
